Regional Guides — Farm Solar Insights

UK regional farm solar guides covering local climate, DNO operators, planning authorities and agricultural context for every county and region.

UK farm solar economics vary materially by region. Annual irradiance ranges from 1,100 kWh/kWp in the South West and Anglesey down to 920 kWh/kWp in the Highlands and west Wales — a 16% spread that affects payback by roughly 6 months. DNO performance varies even more: UKPN delivers G99 in 6-10 weeks, while SSEN Highlands sometimes takes 12-20 weeks for the same project.

Grant availability is also regional. England farms access FETF (40% capital) and SFI (ongoing payments for agrivoltaic schemes). Wales uses the Welsh Farm Business Grant with quarterly windows and Farming Connect pre-application support. Scotland has CARES interest-free loans, the SRDP Sustainable Production Grant, and 50% capital support for islands and remote rural. Northern Ireland farms access the DAERA Farm Energy Efficiency Scheme at 40% capital.

Planning constraints differ too: AONBs and National Parks span the country differently (Cotswolds, Mendips, Lake District, Snowdonia, Cairngorms, Sperrins) and each affects ground-mount solar approvals. Conservation areas in market towns vary in strictness. Heritage buildings — particularly grain stores, oast houses and listed barns — are concentrated in certain regions.

This category covers the regional patterns that matter: South West and Wales (highest irradiance, NGED + SPEN DNOs), East Anglia (large arable holdings, UKPN, good grid capacity), Midlands (mixed farming, NGED, Cotswolds AONB), North and Yorkshire (livestock + arable, Northern Powergrid), Scotland (small farms + large estates, SSEN + SP Distribution), Northern Ireland (NIE Networks, DAERA grants).
