Welsh Farm Solar Guide 2026: Grants, Planning & Grid Connections

By Rachel Okonkwo · 2 April 2026

Welsh farming — hill livestock in Powys, Carmarthenshire dairy, Pembrokeshire mixed and Anglesey arable — faces a unique combination of climate, planning and grid context. In 2026, the Welsh Farm Business Grant offers some of the most accessible capital funding for farm solar in the UK, and the Welsh Government’s net-zero commitments have pushed local authorities to look favourably on well-designed projects.

The Welsh Farm Business Grant

This scheme funds capital items between £12,000 and £100,000 at 40% intervention. Solar PV is eligible. Applications open in windows; pre-application advice is available free through Farming Connect. Around half of successful farm solar projects we see in Wales are part-funded by this scheme.

Planning & TAN 8

Welsh planning policy is framed by Technical Advice Note 8 (TAN 8) on renewable energy. The 2025 update reinforced the presumption in favour of small-to-medium farm renewables, including rooftop and associated ground-mount. Most local authorities now treat up to 50 kWp ground-mount as non-controversial where visual impact is limited.

Grid connections

NGED covers south Wales and most of west Wales. SP Energy Networks covers mid and north Wales. Both are generally cooperative for G98 (under 16A/phase) applications, but G99 applications in upland areas with older 11 kV infrastructure can require reinforcement.

Climate design notes

Welsh farms see higher rainfall than the UK average (1200–2000 mm/year in many areas), which naturally cleans panels. Yields are typically 5–10% below the South East but still commercially excellent when paired with on-site load. Coastal farms need marine-grade mounting.

Conclusion

Welsh farm solar in 2026 has a well-funded capital grant, supportive planning policy and improving grid access. The biggest delivery risk is upland grid capacity; commission a pre-application grid study before investing in detailed design if your farm sits on an 11 kV spur.
