Northern Powergrid Farm Solar Connection Guide 2026
By Solar Panels For Farms UK · 17 April 2026
Northern Powergrid operates the distribution network across Yorkshire, the North East and North Lincolnshire - an area covering some of the UK’s most productive dairy, mixed and upland livestock farms. Like every UK DNO, Northern Powergrid now manages significant renewable capacity pressure, and the G99 process in 2026 looks different from even two years ago.
Northern Powergrid service area and farm solar mix
Northern Powergrid’s licence area covers Yorkshire (including North Yorkshire, East Riding, South Yorkshire and West Yorkshire) and the North East (Northumberland, Tyne & Wear, County Durham and parts of North Lincolnshire). Together these regions host over 40,000 farms, with the highest concentrations of agricultural solar in the Vale of York, East Riding and Tees Valley.
G99 application timelines 2026
-
Sub-50kW Fast Track: 6-10 weeks from accepted quote to commissioning
-
50-200kW standard G99: 12-16 weeks
-
200-500kW: 16-24 weeks if no reinforcement needed
-
500kW-1MW with reinforcement: 40-60 weeks including DNO civils
Constraint hotspots
-
Vale of York - dense generation from existing solar and anaerobic digestion has saturated several 33/11kV groups. ANM offers are common above 250kW.
-
East Riding coast - limited 33kV headroom around Beverley, Driffield and Hornsea.
-
South County Durham - large existing solar farm deployments have consumed export capacity.
-
Tees Valley industrial fringe - competition with industrial demand creates patchy availability.
ANM (Active Network Management) for farms
For larger farm systems (250kW+) in constrained areas, Northern Powergrid increasingly offers connection on an Active Network Management basis. Your solar export may be curtailed during network peak periods - historically 2-8% of annual generation. We model ANM curtailment as part of every 200kW+ quote so your business case reflects real-world yield.
Practical recommendations
-
Always request a Minimum Cost Scheme (budget) quote before committing - it reveals reinforcement cost in 30 working days.
-
For 100kW+ systems, size to on-site load first, then optimise export capacity second.
-
Battery storage transforms ANM economics - stored energy avoids curtailment losses entirely.
-
Submit G99 applications at least six months before target commissioning date.
